 Oscars 2017 Ethical Fashion

There was a lot of beautiful fashion at last nights Oscars and although, I definitely saw some stunning dresses/looks I would put in my top five, I am focusing on ethical brands that raise awareness of the impact of fast fashion on the environment. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for designers to present one of a kind pieces to celebrities during awards season and while I still saw some unique pieces, a few celebs and designers are starting to make a statement with eco friendly fashion.  I will focus here on the 3 looks and/or designers that stood out from last night’s Oscars event.

Now we all know there was plenty of drama last night from the monumental films that won to the intense speeches written by winners that did not come to the Oscars who were making a statement politically, to some of the other odd things. And of course the dramatic grand finale we all know about by now!

With all that to the side, here are my favorite ethically made fashion pieces that were made or chosen by these celebrities who want to help bring more attention to these causes.

First up we have Emma Roberts, who wore a vintage lacy dress with a black lace bralette top and two layers of ivory skirt with gorgeous beading going down to her feet.  This dress was chosen from Georgio Armani Privé’s 2005 collection.  Sustainable can also mean wearing something that doesn’t use resources to make something new.  It’s helpful to the environment to wear something that’s vintage, more people should do this! That’s why I love thrift stores!  She teamed up with Red Carpet Green Dress, and I love what they came up with, she looked stunning!

Second dress was another one with a low plunging neckline. This look was definitely on trend last night and the lacy, tiered look with fringe hanging to create a flapperesque look (in this dress, she said they represented the chalices by Stella Artois).  This gorgeous silver/grayish dress was worn by Olivia Culpo and she looked beautiful!  It was custom made by Marchesa for Stella Artois’ campaign for Water, an organization that brings attention to and raises money for the global water crisis. Here is the link to her Instagram post for more information on how to help.

My third favorite was actually my top choice! It was a custom, ethically made dress by Vivienne Westwood and worn by Priyanka Bose. I just love the corset strapless top, am in love with the colors, pattern, fit and length (of course the side slit) of it. It was just amazing and different from other dresses!

“The gown will be ethically made according to the Red Carpet Green Dress criteria. This can include a variety of resources such as the use of natural dyes and recycled materials to organic and repurposed fabrics- always with a focus on minimal negative impact on the environment, and environmentally and socially responsible design.” (More info here).

Another fashion accessory trend last night was blue ribbons on dresses, suits, etc in support of ACLU

Side note: Fashions worn by the performers in Justin Timberlake’s, the Moana and LalaLand performances as well as presenters were made by design team from Parrish Workroom out of Los Angeles.  There were hand made and hand dyed pieces,  blog on this coming up later this week!!
